Team Evans toughs it out for gold

Jason Evans and wife Louise have booked their place in the BSA Mixed Pairs championships following a thrilling Sunday of bowls.

The Evans pair were forced to dig deep and their results were reminiscent of the Springboks route to winning the Rugby World Cup.

First up on Sunday, they edged Bedfordview 19-18 in 18 ends. They looked to be heading for a bronze medal in the semi-finals with Jorge Ruiz-Mesa and Lily Adamson taking control of the match.

However, the Evans’ simply didn’t give up as they clawed their way back into the contest before winning 19-18 yet again.

The gold medal match was one for the ages as Esme Murphy and Trevor Rosenberg squared up for an all Morningside BC affair. The Evans’ were 14-11 down with two ends to go before Jason Evans produced a stunning shot to reduce the gap to just two shots with an end to play.

Once again, Evans delivered when it mattered most and played an attacking shot which found and ditched the jack. It helped secure two shots which sent the match into an extra-end.

Once more, the Evans’ were up against the odds but once again Evans produced something special when it was required. This time it was an inch perfect draw to win gold and send his side to the champion of champions event later in the year.

Evans will be hoping to take this form into this weekend’s BSA Masters where he has a rich history of success.

The Proteas star already has four of prestigious Masters titles but will be looking to cement his place as the country’s best with a fifth when the action starts at Wingate Park on Friday.
